How much exercise a Border Terrier needs

Border Terriers are medium to high energy and need about 60 minutes of exercise a day. They are sturdy walkers and happy to cover ground, especially if there is something interesting to chase on the way.

A 45 minute solo walk covers most of it. A short play or stroll later on fills the gap and keeps them out of mischief.

Best Wrexham walks for Border Terriers

Nant Mill, on the Clywedog Trail near Coedpoeth, and Marford Quarry nature reserve, by Gresford and Marford, both give a Border plenty to investigate.

Around Rossett, the River Alyn lanes give a quieter walk. On the reserves, we check the signs on the day for any rules about dogs, and we keep terriers on the lead wherever wildlife is likely.

Which service suits

Solo walks are the best fit for most Border Terriers: 45 minutes, one walker, £20. One-to-one attention means we can manage the prey drive and stay a step ahead of any escape plans.

Got two Borders? The second dog is £5 extra, though we would want to meet both at your home first. Two Borders together can double the escape attempts as well as the fun.

Walking Border Terriers: what we watch for

Escape artists need watching at both ends of the walk. At the meet and greet, we talk through gates, doors and any spots your Border has slipped out of before.

Out on the walk, the prey drive is the other concern. Squirrels and rabbits can override even good recall, so we use a secure harness and lead and keep a long line handy.
